Britney Spears Task

Production Diary

Before the 6 weeks
We were given the two tasks. one was to created a short copy of the music video Britney Spear's Hit Me Baby. This allowed us to experience first hand what it was going to be like when we made our actual music video. It taught me how difficult it was going to be when I try to apply lip sync to my actual video because you have to be extremely precise. The second task we were given was to write an essay to do with the changes of today's music videos compared to older one'e. The essay taught me a lot about Andrew Goodwin and his theories on music videos. It also refreshed my memory and help me expand my knowledge on the male gaze theory e.g. the male gaze theory governs three aspects, how men look at woman, how how women and look at themselves and how women look at other women.

Week 1 - 19/09/14
When I came back from the 6 weeks I was given a ticksheet of all the work that we would be doing for the whole project. This makes it extremely easy to keep track of what work needs to be done and when needs to be done by. We were told to go back and finish any work that needed to be finished. for me it was to analyse the preliminary task of the Britney spears video and upload any work that I had already finished like my essay on Andrew goodwin.

Week 2 - 26/09/14
So I could add to my research and planing I was given tasks to expand my knowledge of the music industry. One of the tasks was to choose a star and analyse them. I chose Michael Jackson and described in my prezi how he became the king of pop, where did he start and what happened to him in the end.

Week 3 - 3/10/14
Continuing with the task we were set last week. One task was to find a variety of artists websites and analyse how they work, look, if they are are good or have major faults. By choosing Artists with different genres or styles I am able to compare them and see whats different. The three i chose was frankmusik, lana del ray and Iggy Azalea. During this task i chose to used a new website to display my work which was called A-nnotate. The website i used was really useful because i was able to annotate the screenshots.

Week 4 - 10/10/14
This week we practiced at lip syncing. I did two practices. one where I actually sung/sang (Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song) and one where I just mimed (Frankmusik - Cake). During this task I found that miming looks less realistic than actually singing however, the frankmusik song is so fast that if I tried to actually sing it it would be too difficult to keep up. I put the videos together and uploaded them to my Blog.

Week 5 - 17/10/14
This week was all about replicated a digipack. We chose Gorillaz - Demon Days. The main basis of this particular digipack are 8 images (2 pictures of each of the members of Gorillaz in with different facial expressions. We used photoshop to edit the photos. Because the images are cartoons we used the program to change the images to appear less realistic by adding an overlay/filter.

Week 6 - 24/10/14
This Week we found three songs that could be used as the main focus of our music video. The three we found were Frankmusiks - cake, Plumtrees - Scott Pilgrim and you had me at hello by a day to remember, Each of them had pros and cons which were discussed in one of the posts we made. In the end we decided that the best one to choose would be Frankmusiks - cake. Since we decided on a song we found out the genre of the song and listed its conventions.

Week 7 - 31/10/14
To find out what our target audience wanted we gave out a questionnaire to numerous amounts of people and got there feedback. We then compiled all the results into a presentation to display all of our analyst. The website we used was emaze which is a really useful and professional looking presentation tool. We were able to use the software to show our finding clearly and effectively.

Week 8 - 8/11/14
We had a few ideas on what we wanted to do with the song so we stated jot all our ideas down and brain storm for a lesson or two. We then started to storyboard using the ideas we came up with. Our strategy was to listen to the song for around and ten seconds and storyboard that section.

Week 9 - 15/11/14
The continuation of storyboarding. In our story boarding so far we have both performance and narrative. The performance side comes from the lip syncing. we had an idea to keep the lip syncing all in one location so we could easily get it done in one filming session. All our lip syncing shots are in a blacked out room with a single light shining on the main artist which makes it simple but effective and powerful. The narrative side of our music video is the idea of a relationship. Throughout the song there are flash backs of the relationship, starting out really happy and slowly the flash backs show them breaking up and falling apart. since the song uses cake as a symbol throughout the whole song we have a cake in every flash back somewhere in the scene.

Week 10 - 22/11/14
Still Story boarding. We found that we are going to have to record and storyboard at the same time because time is crucial and we only have about half the song storyboarded (song is 3:55 long). This week we are going to record all the lip syncing shot. We thought that this would be the best thing to film since the location is on school grounds.

Week 11 - 28/11/14
Last week we recorded however when we looked at the footage on the computer the quality was horrendous. We thought that the problem was something to do with the camera settings so we changed them around and hoped that this would fix the problem when we re-filmed.
When we was re-filming the shot we brought a laptop with us so we could view a shot to see if the problem had been fixed however, the video quality was still the same. We figured that the problem must have been the lack of light (since we only had a single light shining during the scenes) so we brought the artist and the light nearer to the camera and this seemed to fix the problem. One other change we made this time was instead of recording all the shots individually we just recorded the artists lip syncing the whole song from different angles. This way we could just pick and choose what shots we wanted.

Week 12 - 5/12/14
We took the footage and started to edited it. We uploaded all the footage to adobe premiere and cut all the shots where we designated a lip sync shot within our storyboard. The way we filmed it was to have the artists sing the song while we have it playing in the background, because if we did this it meant that syncing it up to the song was easier than we expected as we just matched the song audio from the footage to the song that overlays the whole music video.

Week 13 - 12/12/14
This week we started to edit the music video even further. However, when we started to match the video with the song we noticed that the artist we had chose did not suit the character/voice of the song. Even though we had re-filmed twice now we got together as a group and decided that the artists we chose was not suitable because he didn't fit the genre of the characters. During this week we also found a replacement for the artist, this artist fit the requirements better and was more enthusiastic which reflects the song.

Week 14 - 19/12/14
This week we recorded again but with our new artist. The main thing we recorded was the lip syncing so we could get a feel of how the artist we be portrayed in our music video. Filming went great apart from the beginning because it took some time for artist to learn the lyrics and get into the swing of things. The next thing on our mind was who we could get to play as the female who breaks up with the artist in the narrative.

Week 15 - 26/12/14
This week we found someone to portray our female actress. We then recorded most of the narrative so that we can add them to our music video. When we uploaded them onto the computer we noticed that some of the shot were not really how we wanted them to look like so we will have to record them again at a later date. The only things left to record was some small shots like a cake being cooked etc.

Week 16 - 03/01/15
This week was all about  cutting, editing and syncing the performance shots with the song. Because we played the song while we was recording we knew exactly what part the artist was trying to sing.
During the editing process we found that syncing the video with the audio layer was a trivial task because of the way we went about it. The only problems we had was some shots didn't pick up the song that was playing in the background so when we added these shots we had to work with the movement of the mouth.

Week 17 - 10/01/15
This week we added all the narrative shots (that we had) onto the music video. This was easier to do than adding the lip sync shots since the timing didn't have to be as perfect as the lip sync shots. Since the narrative shots are all supposed to be past tense we has the idea of adding a ghosting effects to show this. However, when we added the effects we found that ghosting distorted the video so much that you couldn't see the facial expressions which is a vital aspect for the narrative shots. We have to find another way to represent the past.

Week 18 - 17/01/15
This week was the continuation of adding all the shots that we shot over the past 2 Weeks. We found that when we was matching up the shots with the timeline (meaning the shot length) the flow of the music video didn't match with the speed of the song. Most of the implications we had were to do with the narrative shots because they were just too long and didn't look or flow well with the song. My idea was to separate the narrative shots with some quick shots. My idea was to film a video of making a cake but from the main artists point of view. We could then cut this into sections and put them in between the narrative shots. This will create a faster flow because the shots will be changing faster.

Week 19 - 24/01/15
This week we took pictures for the use of the digipak and the website. We took them in different places and we used a variety of different shots e.g. Long shot, medium shot and extreme long shot. One problem I found with the pictures after will took them was the fact that the artist was wearing the same outfit through out all the pictures. One of the conventions of our songs genre (pop) was the fact that the artists wear lots or different trendy and mainstream outfits. To make sure that we meet this we will need to take more shots with the artist wearing different outfits.

Week 20 - 31/01/15
This week we started to create our digipak. We decided to use photoshop for the editing sides because photoshop is a very good piece of software when it comes to editing still images such as our digipak.  I'm glad we have photoshop at our disposal because its one of the best photo editing programs that you can get. with the use of it we can use all of it tools to make a really high quality digipak.

Week 21 - 07/02/15
This week we continued working on the video because it was one of our top priorities and we wanted iron out any faults. We finally added in all the shots we had but when watching the video back we saw that the videos pace was very slow when it came to shot changes. The speed of the song was extremely fast but our video didn't really match it. We decided that we needed a more variety of  shots when it came to the performance shots. There are still some gaps in our video here and there where we haven't filmed them yet.

Week 22 - 14/02/15
This week we went out and filmed more because as mentioned in the post above the pace of the song doesn't match our video. By filming more shots we will be able to flick between them at a faster rate. We filmed Two lip syncing videos of the actor singing the entire song. We filmed the actor in two different places whist wearing two different outfits so the video has more variety. We also filmed a few shots that we were missing so we could  feel in the gaps e.g. the cake being blown up.

Week 23 - 21/02/15
This week we added our new lip syncing videos. Because the lip syncing was all filmed as one video we had a great idea to have an extra two video layers on the adobe premiere project that contained the new videos with the song sync to them. This way we could easily take out the slices of videos we wanted to used without having to hunt through the original footage and trying to sync them up over and over again. Looking at the video we can see that the pace has definitely changed, however we felt like the video was still missing something. Our video had a lot of performance and narrative shots but we felt there wasn't enough concept shots. As a group we thought of and idea to film some pov shots of the actor making a cake, this way throughout the video you will see a cake being made and at the end you will see the final creation shown by a slowly zooming out shot of  a cake.

Week 24 - 28/02/15
This week we filmed the pov shots of the cake being made which was more time consuming than we thought it was going to be. One complication we had when we was filming was the fact that we didn't have any sort of go pro camera so we had to set the camera up on a tripod and and constantly had to detach the camera and move the tripod out of the way.  The videos we filmed in my opinion were really well done an will work well in our video.

Week 25 - 07/03/15
This week we Had to re-film the cake being blown up because the original one we had wasn't very good. We added in the cake shots throughout our video so that when you are watching it a cake is being made throughout. The cake represents the relationship being built, when its being cooked its at its peak and when the cake is blown up its the destruction and end of the relationship.

Week 26 - 14/03/15
This week we think we have finally completed the video, every spot on the timeline has been filmed and the only thing we had to do is some small editing changes. One change we had to make is to cut down a few clips that were too long and therefore disrupted the pace.

Week 27 - 21/03/15
We tried to export our video this week but unfortunately the software we was using wasn't exporting it to the highest quality. We set it up to export it at 1080p but it kept coming out at 240p or lower. We must have tried around 12 different export settings before we got a half decent copy. In the end we had to settle for 480p, the video was then uploaded to youtube.

Week 28 - 28/03/15
This week we went back to our digipak using pictures that we had taken a few weeks before. using the software we used will were able to add lots of interesting affects and filters.

Week 29 - 04/04/15
This week we began working oun our evaluation questions, allocating them to each outher and then deciding what question to work together on.
